How to Tell When Patio Slings Need Replacing
Patio slings need replacing when the fabric sags noticeably under normal weight, the weave frays at the rail channels, the surface chalks or fades unevenly, or small tears appear near the seams. Once any of those show up, the sling is at the end of its service life and should be replaced before it fails while someone is sitting in it.
The four signs a sling is finished
Sagging is the first and most obvious sign. A healthy sling sits drum-tight; when the seat dips more than an inch or two under an average adult, the fibers have stretched permanently and no amount of re-tensioning will bring them back.
Fraying at the rail channels is the second. The edges of the fabric take the highest load, and once threads begin pulling free along the spline, the fabric will tear from the edge inward.
Chalking and fading is the third. A powdery surface or blotchy color means the vinyl coating on the mesh has broken down under UV, leaving the polyester core exposed.
Small tears or pinholes near the seams are the fourth. These grow quickly, and a sling that tears while occupied can damage the frame as well.

Between year-round sun, pool chemistry, and dry heat, sling fabric in Los Angeles typically lasts five to eight years — less on unshaded pool decks or coastal properties where salt air is in play.
The frame almost always outlives the fabric. That is why re-slinging is the standard maintenance cycle for quality outdoor furniture rather than a repair of last resort.
